Pollock Town Board discusses electrical issues, use of lunch room

The Pollock Town Board learned at their regular meeting Monday, Feb. 3, that the fire whistle is not working. Maintenance man Travis Vetsch reported that he has been working with an electrician to correct the problem.

Vetsch also brought up the idea of separating the former maintenance shop and water tower electrical service, as it is all tied together. The fire whistle is located in the former maintenance shop, which is currently rented out. Vetsch will work on getting quotes for the project to see if it is feasible.

The board also revisited the issue of the rental of the lagoon land which is not rented out for haying. The board reviewed a letter from Attorney John Von Wald of Selby, and then decided to have Von Wald write up a lease agreement which would address the concerns the board has expressed.

Following board action Monday, the exterior of the south end of the Pollock Community Center will have a new look soon as the board approved allowing Sara Reierson to hang an 8’ by 3’ sign for the Marin-Biel Insurance agency on the exterior wall.

The board also learned from Finance Officer Leanne Jakobsen that she had been approached by two community members requesting the use of the Community Center lunch room for coffee drinkers on Mondays and Tuesdays when the Oahe Sunset restaurant is closed.

During discussion by the board, concerns were raised that the lunchroom and kitchen are rented out for a fee, except to groups who do services for the community. The board did not want to set a new precedent by allowing it to be used for free.

The board did move to allow the coffee group to meet in the Community Center Library, and to revisit the issue if they feel it isn’t working out.

In other action the board:

• Moved to hold a public hearing on March 2 at 8 p.m. for renting the former first and second grade room in the Pollock Community Center, and to hold a public hearing on March 2 at 8:05 p.m. for renting the former resource room in the Pollock Community Center

• Moved to hold the local Board of Equalization meeting on Tuesday, March 17, at 5 p.m. at the finance office.

• Learned MDU has started upgrading street lights with LED bulbs. The project is expected to save $2,306 annually.

• Was informed that 250 to 300 RASDAK (Ride Across South Dakota) bike riders will be spending the night in Pollock on June 6. Pollock is the first stop on their 463 mile bike tour along the Missouri River and four system dams. Most of them will be staying in the Community Center and/or camping in the parks.
