Pollock Men’s Club Fishing Tourney celebrates 40th year

Fishermen in the 40th Annual Pollock Men’s Club Walleye Fishing Tournament, which was held Saturday, June 16, and Sunday, June 17, in Pollock, were greeted by cool, cloudy and sometimes rainy weather both days. 95 teams participated in the tourney. The teams pulled in 747.21 lbs. on Saturday and 687.61 lbs. on Sunday. For the first time three man teams were allowed to participate in the tourney. Fifty-three teams took advantage of that opportunity.

Brent Reilley and Corey Sandmeier of Selby won the tournament with a catch of 29.12. They had been in first after day one and finished in fifth on Sunday. They netted 16.33 lbs. on Saturday and 12.79 lbs. on Sunday.

The three man team of Aaron Anderson-Charles Anderson-Brad Anderson came in second. They had been in 10th after Saturday’s fishing. They netted 10.82 lbs. on Saturday and 13.33 on Sunday for a total of 24.15. The trio are Minnesota fisherman. Aaron is from Garrison, Brad from Maple Grove and Chuck from Albertville.

Donny Palmer and Dave Oachs jumped from 41st to third by almost doubling their catch on Sunday. Saturday they pulled in just 8.74 lbs. but Sunday they netted 15.13 lbs. for a two day total of 23.87

Saturday the biggest fish topped the scale at 5.51 lbs. and was reeled in by Cory Sandmeier. Gilbert Mickelson caught the biggest fish on Sunday. It weighed in at 8.83 lbs.

Raffle winners were: Danny Gjefle-Cobra 380 pistol; and Larry McClure- Browning Maxus Ultimate 12 gauge shotgun. Corey Sandmeier was the high bider at the auction for the two engraved Henry Rifles.

Team 44, Michael Zell-Gary Zell looked to have the big fish on Sunday as they weighed in a 4.96 and a 4.06 pounder, but Gilbert Mickelson of team Mickelson-While-While beat them out with a walleye that tipped the scale at 8.83 lb.

The Men’s Club initiated a new method for getting the boats launched. To cut down on congestion at the dock teams were asked to pick up their second team member (the one who parks their truck and trailer) at a small dock back in the bay rather then have them picked up at the main dock.

Another new tweek to the tourney was allowing three man teams. This team shared a fist bump for luck before heading out Saturday morning.

While the first flight on Saturday split pretty evenly between the north and south main channels, the second flight had largers groups heading into the small bays closer to Pollock and the south dock.

As usual, the dock at West Pollock was a busy sight Saturday morning as the 95 teams launched their boats for the tourney.

10.71 lbs of walleye were netted by team 8, Gary Fahrni-Bob Fahrni-Tom Goehring. That put them in eighth on Sunday.

On Sunday, Saturday’s 5th place team #28, Greg Ehli-Joe Werner-Gene Merck-couldn’t top their Saturday catch of 11.76.

A large group of volunteers helped clean donated fish again on Sunday. The fish will be donated to charitable organizations.

The Pollock Community Action League helped served around 400 people at the fish fry Saturday evening. Those helping out were Jaimie Odde, Bobby Jo Daiker, Melanie Vetsch, Tracy Reierson, Jen Fieldheim, Renee Johnson, Julie Borr and Jodie Streeter.
