MP takes third straight crown at Regionals

Mobridge-Pollock ran its streak to three straight years wearing the crown in region track and the Tigers and Lady Tigers swept the Region 6A Track & Field Meet at Tiger Stadium on Friday.

The Lady Tigers were especially dominant, winning seven individual titles, four relay titles and piling up 267 points. Runner-up North Central was 136 points back with 131.

The Tigers won three individual titles and two relays to score 184.5 points and edge Miller’s 171 points.

Ryli Thompson won two sprint titles, taking the 100 at 13.18 seconds and the 400 at 1:03.32. She had a lot of help scoring points in the two events are Kenedi Schmeichel took fourth and Sophia Overland fifth in the 100 and Jayda Thompson taking second in the 400.

Sophia Overland claimed the 200 title at 28.47. In the 200, the Lady Tigers were 1-2-3 with Schmeichel taking second and Grace Overland taking third.

Faith Heil earned two region titles, winning the 800 at 2:28.79 and the 1600 at 5:57.56. Heidi Olson made the 800 and exciting finish, coming in right behind Heil at 2:28.97. Olson turned around and ran 12:24.25 to win the 3200 title. Blake Thompson backed her teammates up by finishing third in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200. Dawsyn Wientjes picked up sixth in the 1660.

Emily Hatzenbuhler gave the team a field event title with a career best 111-6 in discus. The throwers earned a lot points with Katie Wollman taking second and Jasmin Perez taking third in discus, while Wollman took second, Joslyn Voegele third and Hatzenbuhler fourth in shot put.

In relays, the Lady Tigers won the 4×100, 4×200, 4×200 and 4×800. The 4×100 team of Bain, Schmeichel, Sophia Overland and Mariah Goehring running a season best 56.39. The 4×200 team of Sophia Overland, Netterville, Jayda Thompson and Ryli Thompson won at 1:50.44. Netterville, Heil and the Thompsons ran 4:18.42 to win the 4×400 and Netterville, Heil, Olson and Jayda Thompson won the 4×800 at 10:29.95. The medley team of Bain, Goehring, Wientjes and Cheyenne Ratch took fourth place.

The Lady Tigers did not win a hurdles title but scored a lot with Grace Overland taking second, Brooke Bain fifth and Shayla Rath eighth in the 100 hurdles, and Jacy Netterville taking second, Grace Overland fifth and Shayla Rath seventh in the 300 hurdles.

Adding up more field event points, Ellie Jahraus and Cheyenne Rath became the Lady Tigers’ first pole vaulters. Both girls cleared 4-9 with Jahraus taking third and Rath taking fourth. Blake Thompson took second in high jump and sixth in long jump. Goehring nabbed third in both the long and triple jump. Bain took fifth in long jump, while Grace Overland took seventh and Shayla Rath seventh in triple jump.

Tigers

With Tigers pole vaulting for the first time, the event played a big role in the Tigers defeating Miller for the region title.

Simon Fried won the event and set the Mobridge-Pollock standard by clearing 9-9. Remmington Ford went 9-0 for third and seventh grader Broc Bauer took fourth at 7-9.

Fried made it a two-title day, winning the 300-meter hurdles at 42.69. Ford scored big in hurdles, taking second in both races.

Carter Hinsz picked up his first region title, winning shot put at 44-4.6. Big brother Coy was second at 39-11. Adding more points, Riley Kerner took sixth.

The Tigers teamed to win the 4×400 and medley relays. Ford, Fried, Turner Pfitzer and Shane Henderson ran 3:39.35, their best time of the year. In the medley, Greg Kessler, Mack Saxon, Bauer and Ashton Waliser won the region title at 4:23.97. The 4×200 team of Saxon, Kessler, Tyler Schmeichel and Joseph Dutenhoeffer took second. Also taking second was the 4×800 team of Fried, Waliser, Logan Vetch and Kale Knudson. The team of Dutenhoeffer, Saxon, Kessler and Isiah Waldner finished fourth.

Carter Hinsz took second in the discus, along with Sabastian Oster taking third. Waliser picked up points, taking second in triple jump, and fourth in long jump. Taking third were Henderson in the 400, Knudson in the 3200 and Brady Robinson in triple jump. Dutenhoeffer took fifth in the 200 and seventh in the 100. Pfitzer took fifth in the 400 and Saxon tied for fifth in high jump. Waldner had three places, taking fifth in long jump and triple jump and seventh in the 200. Also taking seventh were Vetch in the 800, Kessler in the 400 and Knudson in the 1600. Rafe Jewett rounded out the Tigers’ day with an eighth-place finish in the 3200.

State Meet

Mobridge-Pollock will take a team of 13 to the Class A State Track and Field Meet to be held Thursday through Saturday at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. Seven Lady Tigers will compete in 11 events, while six Tigers will compete in eight events.

Heidi Olson will run in three individual events as she is qualified in the 800, 1600 and 3200. Going in, she is ranked 17th, 17th and 11th, respectively, in the events.

Ryli Thompson will run the 400 where her season best 1:00.83 is ranked fifth.

Heil is ranked 10th in the 800. Netterville is ranked 19th in the 300 hurdles and Hatzenbuhler is ranked 22nd in discus.

Three of the four Lady Tiger relay teams are ranked in or near medal position. The 4×400 team of Netterville, Heil and Jayda and Ryli Thompson is ranked eighth. Ranked ninth are the 4×200 team of Sophia Overland, Netterville and the Thompsons, and the 4×800 team of Netterville, Olson, Heil and Jayda Thompson. The medley team of Overland, Heil and the Thompsons is ranked 14th.

Fried heads to state with the highest ranking on the team. His season-best 41.04 in the 300 hurdles is the second fastest in Class A this year. He and Henderson will run the 800 where Fried is ranked 19th and Henderson 21st. Ford will run both hurdle races and is ranked 17th in each. Hinsz enters the competition ranked 12th in shot put.

The 4×800 team of Pfitzer, Vetch, Henderson and Fried is ranked ninth while the 4×400 team of For, Pfitzer, Henderson and Fried is tanked 23rd.
