In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus says, ”All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
These are our marching orders. The question is, how are we going to fulfill this command? The first way we can do this is being an active witness for our faith within our families and in our local community. We are made to make a difference in other peoples lives. We should always be thinking about how we can reach others for Jesus through our involvement in church activities and out reach to those who do not know him. Some are called to the mission field as their profession. The disciples and the Apostle Paul set the example with their mission related activities. We should all support missionaries through our local churches. Many are facing very difficult circumstances and they need our prayers. Short term mission trips are another good way to reach others for Jesus.
I never thought I could leave my office for a week to do a missions trip. I now have now gone to Pine Ridge 5 times with many teens and some of their parents. Our eyes were opened to the poverty and need for the word of Jesus on the reservation. Support of the Gideon mission is a way that spreads the gospel message throughout the world without going any farther than your mailbox. Jesus’ commands include more than spreading the word however. We are to help those who have physical needs.
Once again you can do this through using your mailbox. World Vision and Samaritan’s Purse are just two examples of organizations that distribute aid in many forms in addition to the message of Christ. The important thing is that we all need to be doing something. As we consider the many in this world who have not heard of Jesus Christ we have a lot of work to do. That is what we are here for. As Christ’s return is ever closer, we need to do our part to help produce a bountiful harvest of Christian souls.
