Midweek Message

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching” – Hebrews 10:25 NIV.

Harvest, the beginning of school, boys’ football, girls’ volleyball, preparations for the coming winter, these all contribute to a busy fall season. When people start making excuses for not serving God or not being in church because they are just swamped with work and/or activities, it is typically the case that the next season will also filled. The winter won’t work out, the spring will be a mad rush, most of the summer will be taken up with long hours in the field or at work. If there is a free weekend, a person really should go fishing, or golfing. That is how many people choose to live.

Being too busy for God is an extremely sad response to His blessings in your life. This summer, have you been faithful in the worship services of your church? Have you taken time for your immediate family, to be part of their lives and provide spiritual training for the children? Have you considered the Biblical responsibilities to your extended family? Have you considered the needs of older community members who are housebound or in nursing homes?

Sometimes people have the idea that the church should provide all of the above as services, for which they have no responsibility. This is a sure formula for failure and disappointment. The pastor is responsible for the worship on Sunday, but all people are responsible to take part and encourage others in their faith (Hebrews 10:25). The pastor is responsible to provide spiritual training, the church is to provide Sunday School teachers, and the parents are to be faithful in bringing their children for spiritual nurture (Ephesians 6:4). The pastor is responsible to visit the nursing home and the housebound, but so are all the members of the church (James 1:27). These ministry responsibilities, in various ways, belong to all of us.

We all have twenty-four hours in a day. It is your responsibility to establish Biblical priorities, and live by them. Your obedience to God in all of these areas makes a big impact in people’s lives. You are important to God, to your family, to your church, and to the community as a whole.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up,” Galatians 6:9 NIV
