Campbell County Economic Dev. Update

It’s a New Year and in the world of economic development that means grant programs are open to submit applications to. The top priorities are finding grant funds for our fire departments. We were successful last year in securing funds with a couple of programs and we hope to do it again in 2021.

The FEMA Firefighters Assistance fund is open with a deadline date of Feb. 12. I have been working with the Herreid Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) regarding their equipment needs and we will be submitting another application to FEMA. Also, I have been working to define further needs for both HVFD and PVFD (Pollock) in order to submit requests to the Firefighters Charitable Foundation grant program. T he Herreid Tornado Siren grant request details are being worked out and we should be submitting the USDA Community Development paperwork sometime in February.

A letter of intent was submitted to the Larson Foundation to support a new clothing bank for school age children and a dry goods food pantry. The Larson Foundation responded positively by allowing us to complete their application process by March 1.

Future projects are still on track, too. The American Vietnam Traveling Tribute wall is still scheduled to be in Herreid June 24-27. Con Ed Development continues to work through the permitting process for the Campbell County Wind Farm Phase II project.

I attended the South Dakota Governor’s Department of Tourism Conference Jan. 20-21. Our state’s tourism industry (which is the second largest revenue producer in the state) was negatively impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. But all future indicators are pointing to a positive comeback in 2021.
