Vander Vorst participates in Vocal Artist contest

James Vander Vorst recently participated in the 31st Annual Young Vocal Artist Competition at Black Hills State University. James took second place in the senior division by singing two songs, “Lungi Dal Caro Bene,” sung in Italian and “Salvation Belongeth unto the Lord.”

James was accompanied by Dr. Charles Canaan of Rapid City. Dr. Canaan also is James’voice coach as he does take private lessons outside of school. His efforts and success in the Young Vocal Artist Competition have earned him a Music Scholarship at Black Hills State University.

James has had a love for music since he was very young. At the age of three he started singing old-time country songs with his dad, Grant. James, a Junior at Stevens High School in Rapid City, has participated and been a member of All State Choir for two years. Additionally, James plays the bass guitar in Band and Jazz Band at Rapid City Stevens High School. James enjoys all genres of music, but he especially likes jazz and country music. He has won and/or placed in multiple singing competitions over the years in the Black Hills.

James is the son of Grant and Terri Vander Vorst of Highmore and Sherri Sauder of Rapid City. He is the grandson of Terry and Linda Vander Vorst and great-grandson of Betty Vander Vorst and Bea Reierson.
