Historical paintings of Good Friday typically picture three crosses. The Gospels record that the Lord Jesus was crucified between two thieves, one on his right hand and the other on his left. Isaiah 53 prophesied that the suffering servant would be assigned “a grave with the wicked.” The experience of being crucified with thieves was meant to further dishonor Jesus.
