Achievement Days begin today, continue through Tuesday, Aug. 5

The Campbell and Walworth County Achievement Days begin today (July 31) and continue tomorrow, Aug. 1, and Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 4-5. The Livestock and Small Animal Exhibits will be at the 4-H Barn in Selby July 31-Aug. 1, and the Display Exhibits will be at the Mound City Community Center Aug. 4-5.

Livestock/Small Animals

The beef, sheep, swine and market goat weigh-ins and the check-in of dairy animals begin today at 5 p.m. A Livestock Committee Meeting will follow the weigh-in.

On Friday, Aug. 1, rabbit, poultry and milking dairy check-in will begin at 8 a.m. The Livestock Shows for swine, sheep, dairy cattle and dairy goats begin at 9 a.m.

The noon lunch is sponsored by the Selby Community Club and will be prepared and served by the Akaska Community Club and the Selby Lioness. There is a 50¢ charge per plate.

The Livestock Shows continue at 1 p.m. with the beef, rabbits and poultry. The Round Robin will follow the Beef Show.

A BBQ Supper will be held at the Selby Opera House at 5:30 p.m., with a cost of $6 for adults and $4 for 4-H and children ages 5-12. Advanced tickets are available from 4-Hers for $5 each and are also eligible for beef certificate drawings. The meal will be prepared and served by the Mobridge Chamber Ambassadors. Watermelon will be provided and served by Wells Fargo Bank of Mobridge.

At 6:15 p.m., the 4-H Performing Arts Troupe will give their performance at the Opera House. Donor recognition, youth recognition and drawings will follow the performance.

All exhibits will be released at 8 p.m., with the exception of the dairy exhibits, which will be released at 6 p.m.

Display exhibits

Display Exhibits will be entered at the Mound City Community Center starting at 10 a.m. on Aug. 4. There will also be Interview Judging for 4-Hers as well as the Open Class Exhibit entries in horticulture, visual arts, photography and home environment.

The lunch at 11:30 a.m. will be sponsored by Farm Credit Services of America and the Farm Bureau. It will be served by the Campbell County 4-H Leaders Association.

Fashion Revue Judging will begin at 1 p.m., with practice for the Fashion Show to follow. The 4-H Judging Contest for horticulture, visual arts, family & consumer sciences and photography will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The Geocaching Adventure will begin at 2 p.m. This is a free activity for all youth and will allow them to learn more about “treasure hunting” using GPS. Extension Educator David Vander Vliet will lead the activity.

The exhibits will close for the day at 5 p.m.

A Dog Show at 8:30 a.m. will open events on Aug. 5. That will be held on the north side of the Community Center.

The exhibits will open to the public at 9 a.m. Concessions will also be available for the day. Talent Show practice will be held in the afternoon starting at 1 p.m.

The “Great Cookie Bake Off” will be held from 5-7 p.m. Everyone is invited to bake their favorite cookie recipe and bring them to the Community Center. Contact the Campbell County Extension Office at (605) 955-3305 for more information.

Evening activities begin at 7 p.m. with the Fashion Show, Talent Contest, Cookie Auction and Youth in Action Ribbons. A Pie Social will conclude the day’s events. Pies will be donated by Campbell County 4-H families and the ice cream is donated by Kanable’s Orchard.

The exhibits will be released at 8:30 p.m., and Achievement Days will be complete for another year.
